This book introduces a novel approach to the design and operation of large ICT systems. It views the technical solutions and their stakeholders as complex adaptive systems and argues that traditional risk analyses cannot predict all future incidents with major impacts. To avoid unacceptable events, it is necessary to establish and operate聽anti-fragile聽ICT systems that limit the impact of all incidents, and which learn from small-impact incidents how to function increasingly well in changing environments.

The book applies four design principles and one operational principle to achieve anti-fragility for different classes of incidents. It discusses how systems can achieve high availability, prevent malware epidemics, and detect anomalies. Analyses of Netflix鈥檚 media streaming solution, Norwegian telecom infrastructures, e-government platforms, and Numenta鈥檚 anomaly detection software show that cloud computing is essential to achieving anti-fragility for classes of events with negative impacts.

Amazon's Kindle Fire is a very affordable tablet computer offering an unbeatable combination of utility, value and features. Your ultimate tablet experience is just one step away - selecting the applications, or apps, that provide exactly the entertainment, education, and functionality you desire. And that's where this guide will help you: finding the gems in Amazon's App Store.聽

The App Store contains a breathtaking array of games, entertainment, utilities, and tools. Only those apps that deliver outstanding functionality - and whose developers have demonstrated a serious commitment to their customers - have made it into this reference guide.聽

Nobody enjoys spending time weeding through apps that don't deliver the promised features (or contain hidden features you'd rather not have installed on your Kindle Fire).
Apress is proud to announce that Rethinking the Internet of Things was a 2014 Jolt Award Finalist, the highest honor for a programming book. And the amazing part is that there is no code in the book.

Over the next decade, most devices connected to the Internet will not be used by people in the familiar way that personal computers, tablets and smart phones are. Billions of interconnected devices will be monitoring the environment, transportation systems, factories, farms, forests, utilities, soil and weather conditions, oceans and resources.

Many of these sensors and actuators will be networked into autonomous sets, with much of the information being exchanged machine-to-machine directly and without human involvement. Machine-to-machine communications are typically terse. Most sensors and actuators will report or act upon small pieces of information - "chirps". Burdening these devices with current network protocol stacks is inefficient, unnecessary and unduly increases their cost of ownership.

This must change. The architecture of the Internet of Things must evolve now by incorporating simpler protocols toward at the edges of the network, or remain forever inefficient. Rethinking the Internet of Things describes reasons why we must rethink current approaches to the Internet of Things. Appropriate architectures that will coexist with existing networking protocols are described in detail. An architecture comprised of integrator functions, propagator nodes, and end devices, along with their interactions, is explored.

"The book is great! It's clear and easy to read, with loads of examples that showed my students what to do."聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

-- Larry Snyder, Emeritus Professor, University of Washington, Department of Computer Science and Engineering

鈥淗aving the TouchDevelop book available made our events so much easier. Students could figure things out for themselves with help from the book.鈥?lt;/p>

-- Jennifer Marsman, Microsoft Principal Developer Evangelist

Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are set to become the main computers that virtually all people will own and carry with them at all times. And yet, mobile devices are not yet used for all computing tasks. A project at Microsoft Research was created to answer a simple question: 鈥淚t is possible to create interesting apps directly on a smartphone or tablet, without using a separate PC or a keyboard?鈥?The result is TouchDevelop, a programming environment that runs on all modern mobile devices such as Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and also on PCs and Macs.

This book walks you through all of the screens of the TouchDevelop app, and it points out similarities and differences of the TouchDevelop language compared to other programming languages. For users, the book can serve as a handyreference next to the phone. The book systematically addresses all programming language constructs, starting from the very basic constructs such as variables and loops. The book also explores many of the phone sensors and data sources which make creating apps for mobile devices so rewarding.

If you are new to programming with TouchDevelop, or if you have not yet worked on touchscreen devices, we suggest that you read the book starting from Chapter 1. If you are already familiar with the basic paradigm of the TouchDevelop programming environment, then feel free to jump ahead to the later chapters that address particular topic areas.

This book is written from the perspective of a person developing their code using a web browser. The TouchDevelop Web App runs in many modern browsers on many different devices including smartphones and tablets, Macs, PC. All screenshots and navigation instructions refer to the TouchDevelop Web App running in a browser. For Windows Phone, there is a dedicated TouchDevelop app in the Windows Phone Store which gives access to many more sensors and data sources. Starting with the TouchDevelop app v3.0 for Windows Phone 8, the phone app will share the same look and navigation structure and all features of the Web App.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

Technical Systems-of-Systems (SoS) 鈥?in the form of networked, independent constituent computing systems temporarily collaborating to achieve a well-defined objective 鈥?form the backbone of most of today鈥檚 infrastructure. The energy grid, most transportation systems, the global banking industry, the water-supply system, the military equipment, many embedded systems, and a great number more, strongly depend on systems-of-systems. The correct operation and continuous availability of these underlying systems-of-systems are fundamental for the functioning of our modern society.

The 8 papers presented in this book document the main insights on Cyber-Physical System of Systems (CPSoSs) that were gained during the work in the FP7-610535 European Research Project AMADEOS (acronym for Architecture for Multi-criticality Agile Dependable Evolutionary Open System-of-Systems). It is the objective of this book to present, in a single consistent body, the foundational concepts and their relationships. These form a conceptual basis for the description and understanding of SoSs and go deeper in what we consider the characterizing and distinguishing elements of SoSs: time, emergence, evolution and dynamicity.
